Rage Reviews

Season 1

Origin: 25/25

Being a huge DC fan, I was keen to see what kind of world I was entering. I wasn’t disappointed! Set in a time when Dick Grayson is discovering who he is after Robin, he needs to step up and take the leader figure role. I loved how they limited each offer the characters powers, due to them not being experienced or having some sort of problem to solve to get stronger. It really helped for character development and sets them up nicely for the next season. I loved the different appearances from characters like the Doom Patrol and Batman, it connected the whole DC Universe and made it feel like a vast place to explore. I’m glad I watched it, having a rich background is always important and this show does it well.

Story: 22/25

DC once again attempts to make a dark gritty narrative. This time though most of the action and story arc is very good, I loved the how the group came together, it was fresh and exciting. I did feel that one episode was not as good as the rest and that was the backstory for Hank and Dawn, I felt that it dragged a little and that we could have done with more screen time on the actual teen titans. Apart from that it was fantastically intense and the narrative slowed really well.

Camera/SFX: 22/25

This is where the biggest problems are. Since DC haven’t decided who should play Batman in the series they instead used CGI, but only his back or his front in shadow. This was a problem for me as when Bruce became Batman and did what he did in the season finale, the effects weren’t the best. They managed to have great CGI for the rest of the characters like Starfire, Beast boy and Raven. Camera shots were very good, especially when Dick gets drugged in the asylum and starts dreaming, you really feel his confusion, thanks to good camera placement and some dark fuzzy lighting.

Performance: 24/25

Well done to all four of the main cast, they all managed to grasp the character core motives and struggles. Anna Diop was kickass and proved all the haters wrong about her casting choice. The biggest surprise for me was Brenton because he was entering a role that is a big challenge, due to him being a beloved character to many and understanding the rich backstory of Dick Grayson. Everyone in the Doom Patrol fitted in nicely and so will watching that series when it comes out. There were no Oscar winning performances, but it was great.
