Rage Reviews

Season 1

Origin: 22/25

Going off the source material, it did well to show the aspects that made the book so good. It clearly highlighted the topics and gave us a good backstory to sink our teeth into. I felt that characters reflected well from the books and I could connect with them.

Story: 23/25

This season doesn’t muck about with lighthearted topics, it delves straight into things that should be talked about more. It was a smart idea to tell the story from the deceit Hannah Baker, it had more of an impact than to discover what happened yourself.

Camera/SFX: 22/25

Dark and moody, obviously to show how depressing it is. it could have gone further with camera angles and effects. I liked how they filmed the more sensitive bits, they didn’t over do it and it still made an impact.

Performance: 24/25

Dylan Minnette did well to play the lead, his character was on a righteous path and had many obstacles to get past. Some actors reactions are bizarre and need to be more convincing. But the real star of season 1 was Katherine Langford, she made us feel and think about the actions we make everyday and her character leaves a mark on all the other characters.

Season 2

Origin: 19/25

I liked that they kept the energy going, keeping the heat on Bryce Walker and highlighting the issues of today. Keeping the topics the same helped to push their issues clearly across and made for good backstory. Its good that we are still learning new mysteries and uncovering new things that our characters are hiding.

Story: 18/25

This whole thing of Clay Jenson seeing Hannah Baker is not what I expected and it wasn’t good for the story. I start lose some emotional attachment to characters and they start to go off the rails. I did like the battle to get Bryce convicted, it connect seasons nicely and then gave the characters more to develop with.

Camera/SFX: 20/25

If somethings darkly lit it doesn’t make it sad automatically, they need substance behind it. It looked jumbled and confused when editing the footage. I did like the camera angles for some intense scenes, they do know how to make your blood boil.

Performance: 21/25

My favourite this season was Justin Foley (Played by Brandon Flynn), his struggle had good narrative and allowed for more development of his character. The actor himself did great at keeping his character consistent and relatable. Some actors are starting to get a bit over the top and make it seem more like a soap opera than a real life drama.

Season 3

Origin: 12/25

It seems to me that they move further away from the book each season. I’m missing the exciting world building and character developing from the first season. We learn that the characters are still keeping secrets, I’m starting to think that the series only thrives off of secrets. The characters never develop anything, they just worry about petty things.

Story: 10/25

For me, this is the worst season so far. Firstly, the new character Ani Achola (Played by Grace Saif) is so terrible that she just doesn’t make sense. Her character is flung into the story and we as an audience are expected to deal with it. We have no emotional connection with her and her characters drive is weird. Another thing is that they try and humanise Bryce Walker, it was a risky move that didn’t pay off and left me kind of angry. Oh and by the way… the reason Bryce dies is stupid.

Camera/SFX: 12/25

This season took a weird approach to filming. When the characters were in the present they would be in grey dull lighting and then when we see a flashback it would be another tone that just didn’t work. The grey dull lighting put me off and was an annoyance. It was nothing special and they seem to be putting less effort into this season.

Performance: 17/25

One person that stays consistent throughout these seasons is Devin Druid, he plays Tyler Downs so well that I’m fully convinced. His character goes through so much, and for use to hate him near the start to loving him by the end, takes good writing and a good actor. The cast are always good when it comes to the sensitive matters and they give a good show. I’m hoping next season that they come into their own as they’ve all blended into one.
